'Cair da Noite', onde o homem se mostra incapaz de entender o Universo em toda a sua grandeza e complexidade, é considerada uma das melhores novelas de Asimov. Por outro lado, 'O Mestiço' é um exemplo notável da utilização da ficção cientifica para denunciar a discriminação racial.

Nightfall is one of my early reads in SF genre, and after all these years I can still feel the eerie feeling that I felt after read the last word of the story.
My rating could be bias for some people. As in other Asimov stories, we seek the gems in the ideas. So, if some people said the characterizations or plots of his works are not great, I can't disagree. But Nightfall has good world building and surprisingly better than average execution for Asimov's works. The execution successfully made me...more

Lagash is a fictional Earth like planet, with a double Trisolaris situation - system of six suns, that keeps the planet perpetually lit. Lagash-ians have never experienced any darkness during their recorded history of civilization and the system of six suns is pretty much their accepted universe in its entirety. (view spoiler)[So imagine, how darkness and appearance of millions of stars in sky would affect the people, during the occurrence of an event like night. (hide spoiler)]

The long night had come again.
I am deeply impressed by this sci-fi short by Isaac Asimov from 1941.
Set in a world that is influenced by not one, but six suns, the people of Lagash only know eternal day. The sunlight never fades anywhere on the planet, since one of the six suns is always on the sky.
This had led to mankind evolving with an inherent fear of the dark. It is one of the most primal instincts that babies are born with on planet Lagash.

The thought of gazing upward to the stars driving any creature to complete madness is a difficult concept to fathom, nonetheless that's the driving force behind the story of Nightfall.
Picture a planet with six suns and no other way to light people's world. Every light they utilize, inside or out, comes from their suns. A few select scientist discovered there will be a total eclipse of all six suns and total darkness will ensue.

Enjoyable. A cool concept of a night that only comes every 2000 years on a far away world.
Me thinks Pitch Black was inspired by this in some way.
I subtracted a star because I cannot believe that a world that far in the future would operate without artificial lights. Oh well. Minor problem in an otherwise classic story.

A nice palate-cleanser - short, creative, refreshing. Considered one of the best classic scifi short stories by many.
This has been expanded into a full novel by Asimov himself.

'But if it turns out that four hours pass - and another four - and nothing happens?' asked Theremin softly.
'Don't let that worry you. Enough will happen.'
It would be hard to stand, I admit, because I'd have to make you all out to be a bunch of gibbering idiots, but if I can get people laughing at you, they might forget to be angry.
There just isn't any place in the universe you could put a million sun's - unless they touch one another.

Well, indeed. My early life. I recall reading this story many years back, in my early HS days. I was amazed and captivated by the ideas and imagery expressed. Though the story is obviously dated today, it is pleasant to let one's mind wander back to its earlier days, also to imagine the far off days of 1941, when the young Asimov wrote this story. A different world.

This story was written in answer to a quote attributed to poet Ralph Waldo Emerson:
Asimov disagrees.
Short and sweet, don't read after dark, strongly recommend.

This story is terrible in every way except for writing style. Implausible concept, characters colorless, too numerous, confusing beginning, too long. The idea behind it is neat, but meatless, and it just doesn't work.

Now this is the story worth reading. It was one of the first books written by Asimov that I read. Even though Asimov is known for his science-fiction, I started with his mystery novels and I loved the way he wrote. So I continued to hunt down anything he had written and I came across this in one of the anthologies that collected his short stories. I never looked back. This story is my favorite of his stand-alone short stories and I'll tell you why.

I chose Asimov’s first critically acclaimed sci-fi short as my “keystone book” to ease me back to reading as I used to years ago, with its noteworthy Socratic dialogue-between-the-characters style of giving the reader background information and well thought out story of an imagined civilization. In 13,000 words, Nightfall explores the development (and redevelopment) of a “human” civilization that evolved on a planet with perpetual sunlight and the effect on this civilization of a quite a long lu...more

I did not finish this book simply because I wasn't in the mood for a thoughtful study of what nightfall would mean to a planet with 6 suns. As a result of its unique circumstances, nightfall only comes once every 2000 plus years. Society has only recently advanced to the point where it is able to excavate the ruins of prior nightfalls and predict the coming nightfall. An ancient religion is ahead of science in that it is able to predict nightfall from its records. Psychology is at a loss, as dem...more

As the first Asimov story i ever had the chance to read, and probably one of the first real Sci-Fi novellas, i was approaching this book with suspicion at first.
The short story drew me in immediately and i was flooded with Asimov's ability to create a fantastic world from darkness (which is also a huge theme of this novella).
Asimov's description of human fears was spot on and hooked me in. I will probably read more of his stuff, and I will consider quite strongly reading the full novel based on...more

We are plunged into an alien world where the concept of night does not exist. We are rushed into this society, their science, religion, history and mythology, which is an exploit in so few pages. I felt as if I was there, the hour before an apocalyptic event. Will it really happen or are the astronomers wrong? will an eclipse put the whole world into pitch-black darkness, making everyone mad, or will the scientists be ridiculed when nothing happens? We feel the anguish, we feel the strangeness o...more

this story is AMAZING, i sat enthralled the whole way through. this is a great example of my favorite kind of sci-fi, the kind that stretches your mind, twists it a little, and is ridiculously relevant. what a concept.. asimov, you genius.
if you like sci-fi at all and you haven't read this yet, stop what you're doing and read this. the 27 page pdf can be found here. in my opinion, the less you know going in, the better; it makes the discovery and build-up that much more gripping.

I normally hate short stories. Just as I get into them, they end. My favourite short story of all time, and the one time you'll hear me say the short story was better than the longer book version. More bang. It's wonderful.
Imagine you lived on a planet with multiple suns, so it was always light. Except, once every 2,000 years when all the suns are eclipsed. You see the night sky. You see the stars. The world goes mad.
With the 2017 eclipse, a perfect story for the time!

Quite a unique situation to think about. Although the circumstances as very different of Earth and this planet, you could definetly relate to the people in the story from their point of view. Asimov did a wonderful job of putting you in their shoes.
I say 4/5 because although a good story and great writing, the novella was slow at times to where I had no interest.

Quite a twist for an Asimov story, no logical deduction of mystery, but suspenseful nonetheless. A solid allegory for science pressing for understanding based on the parameters of its situation. There are six suns, so night would presumably never come and be a truly foreign concept. The interplay of science versus religion/superstition is an apt one.

Always spoiler free. This short story is brilliant. I've only read a few of Asimov's works and I am now convinced he was a master of his craft. The characters, settings, and events were exceptionally well presented. The story line was interesting, compelling, and with increasing tension as I read to it's uncertain ending. I recommend the masterful tale to everyone.

This is said to be the classic science fiction short story. Considering it was written in 1941 by a 21 year old, it is a remarkable feat. Personally, I prefer Bradbury's 'There Will Come Soft Rains' and Asimov's 'Evidence,' 'Reason,' and 'The Last Question.'

Set on a world of constant light due to the planet's orbit around six suns, Nightfall tells the story of the one night every 2000+ years when all the suns set at the same time, plunging the world into assumed darkness. I say assumed because none of the residents of the world have any record of the previous 'nightfalls.' Instead, archaeologists have found multiple cyclical collapses of civilization containing evidence of massive fires. The 'Apostles of Flame' - a cult on the world - teach that th...more

To the non scientific mind, unknown phenomena can be a source of plentiful pitfalls and problems. When not being confused with facts, it is dwelling on irate or superficial thoughts. Following a cult is an even incomprehensible leaning, but the less an average to below average human is aware of the actualities of events, the more they will need word (especially assured) from figures they have attributed authority/their thinking to. Nightfall captures the downfall of a cabal of mortals caught up...more

The idea of a people so utterly terrified of darkness, who live their entire lives in sunlight and to whom the stars and darkness are an inconceivable horror, was novel and fun. The scattered ideas about belief and the unknown and intelligence were fun, too, although the anti-religion sentiment was a little heavy. Still: just light a fucking campfire, guys. No need to destroy civilisation.
