F-14 Tomcat Paper Airplane: Almost everyone out there has at one time or another folded and flown paper airplanes. That's because they are simple (most of them) and fun to fly. This model is based on a design I got from a book that I moded.
1. World Record Holder
World Record Plane Plans (PDF) |
The enclosed .pdf, which comes marked with folding instructions, belongs to the paper airplane dynamo Ken Blackburn. On four occasions over 15 years, Blackburn has broken and re-broken the Guinness World Record for 'time aloft.' So rest assured, it's not just for kids--print, fold, and fly.
Ken Blackburn had already broken and re-broken the world record for 'time aloft,' at 16.89 and 17.2 seconds, when he began lifting weights to train for his third record-breaking throw. He nailed it in 1994, shortly after publishing the World Record Paper Airplane Book, with a flight time of 18.8 seconds. After a dethroning, Blackburn went back to work, designing hundreds of planes and training rigorously. The plane shared here is record-setter number four, which Blackburn launched in the Georgia Dome in 1998--retaking his record from the challengers with a flight time of 27.6 seconds.

2. Paperang
Edmond Hui invented the Paperang, which, as you might guess, returns to the thrower after a quick loop around the room. For this contest, he submitted the Paper Moth. After flying straight for a few yards, it begins to flap its wings in a spectacular, chaotic dance.
3. Oragami Plane
Because this design comes from origami artist Rikki Donachie, the plane is folded from a single sheet of paper. 'She'd never be caught cutting or gluing,' Hobza said.

4. Trident

5. Falcon

Designed by Paper Airplane Calendar author Kyong Lee, this design replicates an F-16 Falcon. According to Lee, the leading edge extension of the wing, with a long nose and vertical rudders, give the Falcon good stability in flight.
