DirectorBharathiraja had painted in the beautifulcanvas the village called Muttom in Kanyakumaridistrict in Kadalora Kavidhaigal and AlaigalOyvadhillai. Debutant director Raja Mohanwho has handled story, screen play and directionhas portrayed the same village in a moregorgeous and spell binding fashion in KPKP.His new sphere of operation is sure to takeTamil cinema to places. Dialogues are drenchedin the distinct native flavor of Kanyakumaridistrict like never before in Tamil films.
Hero Ramakrishnan hails from a medium affluentfamily. Heroine Darshana who has been desertedby both her parents comes to her granny’svillage for studies. The friendship of thelead characters leading to love has beencrafted well by Raja Mohan who shines inthe scene where Darshana asks innocentlyto Raja Mohan who is doing a peeping Tomjob when she is bathing about the Mathsclass that she missed. When the hero’smom finds out about their childlike love, she goes on a hysterical mission, floggingand cutting Darshana’s hair. When the hero on his arrival from school tourgets to know this, he retaliates by movingaway from his mom and takes to alcohol.Meanwhile Darshana is sent to a differentvillage and is thrown into the hands ofmalicious people who try to ravage her inthe façade of protecting her. Arrangementsare being made to forcefully get her marriedto a rogue. The events that follow thisform the remaining plot which has been narratedin a no-nonsense way.
Hero finds it an uphill task to emote especiallyin serious scenes. Darshana has a perennialmelancholic visage even when she smiles.Performance of hero’s mom is noteworthy. The artist who has done the role of Kamal’sfan fits perfectly.
Story glides smoothly without any forcedelements albeit a bit slow. The directorand producer should be lauded for not bowingto any commercial claptrap. There is noseparate comedy track.
Art director has not much of work in KPKPas the streets in Muttom appear naturallybeautiful. Looks like Yuvan has enjoyedhimself while scoring music for KPKP. Chinnanchiruand Oru Ooril will remain in the chartsfor a long time. Cameraman Siddharth’swork is praiseworthy.
Onthe flipside, although the film appearsvery natural, it fails to make an impressionand the scenes don’t make a seriousimpact. Something somewhere is missing.
Verdict:KPKP is for people who enjoy a differentsubject
