I had been with Skype 7.40 for the longest time because I liked the fact that it put something in the taskbar whenever somebody sent me a message while I was AFK. This is important to me because I'm involved in customer service, and a lot of my customers use Skype.

I took the plunge the other day and installed Skype 12.4.716.0, hoping something had changed -- newer versions of Skype have no indication that anything happened until you open Skype.

This version appears to have the same problems.

If I'm at my computer, I see the toasters. I hear the sounds. But if something happens while I am away, I don't see any indication that something happened.

A friend of mine had a version of Skype that put a little number in the corner of the icon pinned to the Taskbar. This one doesn't even do that. Do I need to find out what version he was using and downgrade to that version?

I looked at third-party plugins to resolve the issue, and found nothing there, unless I were to use Skype for Business. We don't have a server, so that doesn't seem feasible either.

Is there something I am missing?
